Video Game Reviews of Mega Man Battle Network 2

Customer Review: Megaman BN 2
Summary: 4 Stars

Megamam BN 2, although still fun, is not all it used to be in BN 1. The year is (presumably) 20X1, and net crime is back on the rise, after taking a sharp drop since our main protagonist Lan defeated the last world dominating evil orgainzation, the WWW, or three worlds. This new threat, a mafya organization called Gospel, is beginning to wreak havock, so as to build their "Super Navi." Lan still has Hub...er MegaMan.EXE as his Navi, which he uses to surf the now three dementional internet.
Several things about this game may be found irksome to veteral BN 1 players. the battle system has changed, making it somewhat harder to get a large assortment of chips avalable for use. Any damage you take in battle is not healed after you leave battle, as opposed to the instant healing process that took place in BN 1. Instead you pay for stupid little things called SubChips, which can heal 50, 100, or MAX HP, as well as not let you encounter viruses with an HP lower than yours for a hundred or so steps, and one chip will even unlock those pesky purple datas, which have valuable items inside.
The gameplay puzzles, especially in Electopia's "Mother Computer" zone are considerably harder, and more time consuming, and bosses HP levels are signifigantly higher in this game. Chip damage levels have changed, making what used to be less powerful attacks more powerful, and vice versa.
Lan, and also various anonymous characters, now seem to feel at freedom to utter profanaties at opportune moments (E.G: damn, hell), which I found as quite a shock, as none such words were ever used in BN 1.
Destinations on the MetroLine have changed as well, SciLab being replaced by the official "Center" in a new area called Marine Harbor. Den City is no longer a selectable destination, it being replaced by Okuden camping grounds, and the newly invented Airport, from where you can reach a new country called Netopia, among others. Lan still rides free, as elementary school students get not only free train tickets, but also free plane tickets.
Overall, the game still has me hooked, albiet not with the luster that BN 1 captured me with, but it is worth the money. Just delete the old game if you get it used, as you'll be totally lost otherwise.

Description of Mega Man Battle Network 2

Three months have passed since the Internet crime organization World Three was defeated by Lan and his virus-busting pal, Mega Man.exe. Just as the world begins to feel safe, a new threat rears its digital head: an evil Internet syndicate called the Net-Mafia Gospel. Will Lan and Mega Man be up to this new challenge?

The gameplay of Mega Man: Battle Network 2 is almost identical to the first game--it's an isometric RPG with a kickin' battle system. You spend half the time in the "real world" as Lan, and the other half in the Internet as the antivirus program Mega Man.exe. Solving puzzles and getting power-ups (and, of course, fighting baddies) are the core of this game.

The crowning glory of Mega Man: Battle Network 2 is its battle system. The arcade-style battles are still in real time, but there are some significant changes since the first game. Mega Man doesn't automatically regain his health after a battle--he needs to find special chips to fully recover. Also, there are now four battle styles from which Mega Man can choose (heat, aqua, wood, or electricity) depending on the type of chips he collects. These chip types affect Mega Man's effectiveness against different enemies. The battle screens have also changed; unique terrains now make battles more varied. And now there are more than 200 chips to collect!

The plot in Mega Man: Battle Network was a little shallow, and seemed geared toward a younger crowd. While Battle Network 2 is also rated E, it has a darker, fuller story--and with an enemy like the Net-Mafia Gospel (which has to be the coolest gang name I've ever heard), the story becomes a compelling enhancement to the game.

Mega Man: Battle Network 2 comes through with some refreshing refinements to all the good features of the original game, making it a must-have for any Mega Man or RPG fan. --Bryan Karsh

Pros:

  • Mega Man changes appearance depending on which battle style he adopts
  • Players trade chips via link cable, or fight a friend for them instead!

Cons:

  • The story may be confusing if you haven't played the first game

The second title in the Mega Man cyber-role-playing-game series, Mega Man: Battle Network 2 puts an emphasis on puzzle-solving and turn-based combat. In the game, Mega Man is back and in mega trouble. There's a new Net crime organization in town, and its computer hacking has created a computer virus that's quickly gaining momentum. It's up to Mega Man and his pal Lan to join the Net-battlers and win the new cyberstruggle by defeating viruses, battling bosses, and solving problems.

This new futuristic franchise features an advanced battle system that allows gamers to change the look of Mega Man based on his or her playing style. Mega Man can use battle chips not only as weapons in battle, but also to replenish his health, help escape a jam, or perform special attacks. Sophisticated tournament-style battles and chip trading via the link cable add to the game's replay value by enticing players to experiment with different combinations of battle chips to find the ultimate one-two punch.
