Customer Review: Final Fantasy VI Advance.....
Summary: 5 Stars

At long last, I'm finally to the end of the Gameboy Advance editions of Final Fantasy. This one being Final Fantasy VI. Originally released in 1994 on the SNES as Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy VI- next to Final Fantasy VII- is the most beloved game in all the series & the most widely talked about. For those of you who weren't lucky enough to play the game during its' first release, the story goes like this...The Gestahlian Empire is taking over the lands. Led by a trio of powerful generals & headed by its' namesake, Emperor Gestahl, they are gaining power. Having fused both magic and technology into something called Magitek, the Empire continues to take over the world one kingdom at a time. A group of people known as "The Returners" begin to fight back, and that's where the story begins. In its' day, Final Fantasy VI was one of the most epic games of its' time. Even by today's standards, few games can stand up to the scope the game had. With a fresher translation, new spells, new espers(like Diablos-Gilgamesh-Leviathan & Gigantaur), a new dungeon & the Soul Shrine; this game is even better than before. While I, personally, never played the SNES version of this game...having played it now, I find the game to be a very entertaining RPG that definitely lives up to its' legacy. What more can I say. If you're new to the series or just now getting into RPGs, you owe it to yourself to round up this game. Heck, you need to round up the other four Gameboy Advance games as well as Final Fantasy III for the Nintendo DS. Then, you'll truly get schooled in Role-playing games 101.

Customer Review: Great Game, With one minor Flaw

This game is Great. Good graphics, excelent Soundtrack and a Compelling History with interesting characters that will inmerse you very quickly in the war against the Ghestalian Empire. The only problem with the game is that the random battles are extremely continuous and that can be quite exasperating after the 15-20 Hours Mark. However, if you like the RPG's it shouldn't discourage you from playing it because even now, after so many years from the original release it's still a great game.

Customer Review: One of the best Final Fantasy games and RPG's

My cousin was a massive RPG fan in the day, playing everything from Secret of Mana to Link to the Past to Chrono Trigger. The other one that he played heavily was Final Fantasy III. It's common knowledge by now that III was the third game released in America even though Japan had released six, hence America numbering it 3. Despite the fact the game's been out for years and I even own the Anthology release, I decided to properly play the game since I never beat it before and it's still a great story, memorable characters and scenes while having solid gameplay. It bugs me that there has been multiple releases of the same game but when it's as good as Final Fantasy VI, it's forgivable.

Story: Previous installments took place in a more fantasy Medieval Ages-type setting. VI shows more of an Industrial Era world with the ancient magic disappearing and technology starting its takeover. The Gestahlian Empire has been making problems for the people with resistance from a small group called the Returners. One day, an Empirical soldier named Terra is found with amnesia and they decide to take her in and figure out how to take down the Empire and restore the world to normal.

Graphics: Strangely enough the graphics almost seem...sharper here. But it's basically the same thing that was on SNES and the PSX release but more cleaner. It of course looks outdated, especially when it employs the Mode-6 system and we get the 3D-esque stuff. But it's got enough of a look to keep you interested as well as some humorous moments when characters do an exaggerated shocked reaction.

Sound/Music: The effects are pretty minimal but where the game shines naturally is in the music. Before composer Nobuo Uematsu started to do the whole rock orchestra stuff, he did some of the most catchiest and heartfelt pieces of music around. From the ethereal Terra's Theme (made even better on a separate piano release) to the eerie Phantom Forest to the opera favorite Aria de Mezzo Caraterre to the psycho-ish Dancing Mad, nearly every track is a keeper. But you'll notice some of it just...sounds different. It's best that you buy the soundtrack since not only does it sound better but it's just good support.

Gameplay: Final Fantasy tends to be separated into 2 categories: job systems and assigned classes. Either you can manipulate what your characters can become (Materia System, Job System) or each character has a specific style of fighting (Final Fantasy IX and IV). VI has kind of a mix where each character has a specific class such as a thief, a ninja, an artist that can control the enemies and many more. However, there's a system called the Esper system where the summons ("Espers" in the game) can be attached to a character one at a time and you can learn the spells that comes with each one and have little bonuses.

The game isn't really that difficult but it's best to level up at periodic times rather than going into grinding mode and levelling up like crazy. Some enemies are pretty easy but other times you'll find it gets tense and you'll feel relief when you win. If there is any flaw at all with the game, it's that there's tons of characters. Some of them get backstories to uncover, while others just feel thrown in there. It allows a bigger range of characters to choose from but the party just seems too stacked and full.

When it comes down to Final Fantasy games and which one's the best, the general consensus is that it's either the ever-popular VII or this one. Doesn't matter which one it is but it's still a great installment and just a great RPG in and of itself.

For anyone who owns a Gameboy and still plays it, or a DS and they feel nostalgic or want a solid classic RPG experience, this is definitely for you. This game is still very good, even by today's standards. As a Gameboy game, it is peerless.
